CARGO's second major intervention on the first wing of the Complan Building built in 1958 was not without challenges. It was necessary to interfere while respecting the existing building, and without coming into conflict with the important expression of the 5th floor in an exposed wood structure built in 2013.
We, therefore, exposed the west facade, which was almost blind, to activate the arrival at the building. This intervention extends to the third floor to give an impressive showcase of the store and lightness to the once massive and introverted building.
With the contents of the building on display, the idea of being inspired by textiles came naturally, in connection with the furniture store, to create a double perforated facade ensuring cohesion between the new and the existing.
In the same spirit, the facade of the 3rd floor is made up of lightly textured metal panels interspersed with wood inserts. The angle of the panels creates an opening effect to the passage of Laurier Boulevard and differentiates the perspective on the east side, in relation to the new volume housing the exit stairs and the west side, with the entrance facade.
Finally, the extension is crowned with a tapered and protective roof clearly delimiting the intervention.
