The concrete building, built in 1980, is expanding with the addition of a second floor to make way for new high-end office spaces. The project consists of an engineered wood structure as well as the upgrade of the mechanical systems on the existing building at 2795 Boulevard Laurier in Quebec City.
This is a first in North America in terms of regulations and feasibility under the Quebec Building Code. The wooden frame offers many advantages, such as greater structural stability than steel in the event of a fire as well as an aestheticism specific to this natural material allowing the creation of unique atmospheres for a much more comfortable work experience.
Architecturally, the striking expression of the wooden structure from the inside to the outside therefore caps with panache the simplicity of a building from another era. The effectiveness of the constructive approach is straightforward: the interplay of glue-laminated timber beams and columns harmonizes with the rhythm already established by the existing facade of the building.
The new wooden columns have been cut in the shape of a diamond in order to slim them down while retaining their load-bearing capacity. The erection of the structure, carried out at a height of 20 meters, took 6 weeks. The whole floor has a raised floor; the technical vacuum created (pressurized plenum) frees the ceiling and keeps the wooden deck visible in addition to housing all the mechanics (electricity, communications, ventilation, etc.) which becomes much more accessible than a false ceiling.
The success of this project is directly linked to the combined efforts of all parties and members of the professional teams as well as the contractor and subcontractors aware of a client's vision of setting a precedent of exceptional construction.
