La Cour – An Integrated Architectural Reflection in the Urban Fabric
The La Cour project, also known as Ilot MA, embodies a thoughtful approach to seamlessly integrating urban density into the heart of the Saint-Roch neighborhood in Quebec City. Designed around a landscaped inner courtyard, it strikes a subtle balance between residential privacy and community interaction. Urban integration is achieved in continuity with the existing fabric, offering a smooth transition between the townhouses on Des Commissaires Street and the denser volumes of the neighborhood.
A detailed volumetric approach created setbacks at the ground floor and upper levels. This design reduces the perceived mass, facilitates pedestrian transitions, and enhances the privacy of lower-level dwellings. These volumetric choices, combined with careful site placement and well-suited materials, promote a respectful dialogue with the surrounding built environment while asserting a contemporary identity.
Site permeability is reinforced through multiple access points and openings that connect the inner courtyard to Victoria Park. This central space serves as a visual and functional transition point, linking private residential areas to the dynamic urban surroundings.
The housing, diverse in typology, is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users, including families, professionals, and retirees. Common spaces, such as the gym and relaxation areas, are oriented toward the courtyard, creating a continuity between private and public spaces. The ground floor integrates these living areas while fostering interaction with the vibrant urban fabric. Finally, a rooftop terrace offers residents a pleasant outdoor space with panoramic views of the neighborhood and the surrounding park.
By adopting sustainable practices and an energy-efficient approach, La Cour establishes itself as a thoughtful architectural intervention, contributing to the harmonious densification of the neighborhood while prioritizing residents’ quality of life.
