CARGOarchitecture's second major intervention on the Complan Building built in 1958 was not without challenges. It was necessary to intervene in the respect of the existing building, and this without coming into conflict with the important expression of the 5th floor in exposed wooden structure built in 2013.

We had to strengthen the brand image of the trade with an intervention that will benefit from the high traffic of this artery. The objective was to create a lantern at the entrance to the city drawing on the dynamism of the boulevard, without altering the rigidity of the existing building.

We therefore exposed the west facade which was almost blind in order to activate the arrival at the building. This intervention extends to the third floor to give an impressive showcase to commerce and a lightness to the once massive and introverted building.

This time, the order consisted of fitting out, raising a level and ensuring universal accessibility on the two-storey basilica near Boulevard Laurier to accommodate the first location of the Must Société Store in Quebec City.
The contents of the building being exposed, it came naturally to be inspired by textiles, in connection with the furniture store, to create a double perforated facade ensuring cohesion between the new and the existing.

Le point fort de la proposition de Cargo est d’aménager la chambre des maîtres au rez-de-chaussée et de localiser les espaces de vie à l’étage. 

Ce choix procure aux espaces de vie un meilleur apport en éclairage naturel, compte tenu de la densité du quartier, en leur donnant accès à une terrasse aménagée sur le toit du garage.

Ce projet d’insertion urbaine reflète le désir du client de se rapprocher du centre-ville en construisant une maison qui sera intégrée au contexte du quartier, tout en bénéficiant d’espaces intérieurs ingénieusement conçus.

On accède à l’étage en empruntant un élégant escalier ouvert et éclairé naturellement par un puits de lumière. La terrasse, qui agit comme le prolongement extérieur des espaces de vie, est ensoleillée toute la journée. Son intimité est préservée au moyen d’une paroi de plantations et d’un espace jardin entre la terrasse et la façade sur rue.

Par ailleurs, la cour arrière conserve son couvert végétal et son aspect naturel. Pour s’intégrer au caractère du quartier tout en assumant l’aspect contemporain du projet, les matériaux utilisés sont des panneaux en acier Corten, de la brique d’argile de type Iron Spot, un enduit acrylique haut de gamme ainsi qu’un bardage de bois exotique.

L’articulation volumétrique de la façade principale, qui positionne les espaces d’entrée au rez-de-chaussée en retrait sous le volume principal de l’étage, permet de créer une entrée plus intime et protégée, une impression de trottoir plus large et une façade vivante qui anime la rue; tout en faisant écho aux alignements urbains des bâtiments adjacents. Cette astuce permet aussi d’accentuer et d’améliorer la transition entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur (inexistante dans les cas des immeubles voisins).
